The Madhya Maheshwar Small Hydro Project (SHP), situated in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, is a run-of-river small hydropower scheme developed on the Madhymaheshwar River, a pristine glacial stream originating from the high-altitude meadows near the revered Madhyamaheshwar temple in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The civil construction work involved the careful design and execution of a diversion structure, desilting arrangements, a partially buried head race channel and tunnel, forebay tank, penstock pipeline, and a small surface powerhouse, all accomplished with heightened sensitivity to the ecologically fragile and spiritually significant alpine environment of the Garhwal Himalayas.

Despite the remote and difficult terrain, extreme seasonal weather, and the logistical challenge of operating in an ecologically protected zone, the project was successfully completed, adding clean renewable energy capacity to Uttarakhand’s decentralized power infrastructure. The Madhya Maheshwar SHP exemplifies the development of small hydro potential in the upper Himalayan reaches, where large-scale hydropower projects are often restricted on environmental grounds.
