The New Hathiari Hydro Electric Project in Uttarakhand is a hydropower development scheme engineered to exploit the hydroelectric potential of a Himalayan river system in the state, forming part of Uttarakhand’s broader strategy to maximize its status as India’s premier hydropower state by developing cascades of run-of-river projects across its major river basins. The civil works undertaken encompassed the construction of diversion barrage, intake structures, desilting chambers, head race tunnel, surge shaft, penstock shafts, and the powerhouse complex, with concrete lining of the Head Race Tunnel (HRT) and surge shaft being among the most technically demanding components requiring precision engineering underground.
The project contributes meaningfully to Uttarakhand’s installed renewable energy capacity, channelling the kinetic energy of Himalayan rivers into grid-quality electricity for domestic and industrial consumers across the northern region. The execution of this project demonstrated the capability to manage complex underground hydro-civil works including rock excavation, steel rib support, shotcreting, and reinforced concrete lining within confined tunnel environments — skills that are among the most specialized in heavy civil construction.
