Dhauli Ganga Hydro Electric Project Stage-2 – Dharchula, Uttarakhand

The Dhauli Ganga Hydro Electric Project Stage-2, located at Dharchula in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, is a run-of-river hydropower scheme harnessing the powerful discharge of the Dhauli Ganga River in the high-altitude Himalayan terrain bordering Nepal. The project involved the construction of major civil infrastructure including diversion weirs, intake structures, desilting chambers, head race tunnels, surge shafts, penstocks, and an underground powerhouse complex, all executed under the severe constraints of remote mountain geography, seismic sensitivity, and harsh climatic conditions.

Stage-2 of the Dhauli Ganga HEP was developed to augment the power generation capacity already established by Stage-1, collectively forming a cascade hydropower development that maximizes the energy potential of this glacially fed river system. The successful completion of this project added significant renewable energy capacity to Uttarakhand’s power grid, providing clean electricity to thousands of households across the state while supporting the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation’s (NHPC) mission of sustainable hydropower development in India’s ecologically fragile yet energy-rich Himalayan river basins.
