The Wangchhu Hydro Electric Project, located near Phuentsholing in the western foothills of Bhutan, is a significant bilateral hydropower initiative developed under the framework of India–Bhutan energy cooperation, designed to harness the hydropower potential of the Wangchhu River flowing from the Bhutanese highlands toward the Indo-Bhutan border. The civil construction scope included diversion and dam structures, water conveyance systems, underground and surface powerhouse works, switchyard civil structures, and approach roads, all executed within a densely forested sub-Himalayan terrain requiring careful environmental management alongside intensive construction activity.

The completion of the Wangchhu HEP strengthens Bhutan’s status as a hydropower-driven economy while simultaneously contributing to India’s clean energy import program from its northern neighbour, reinforcing the long-standing energy partnership between the two countries.
